Opera North is very pleased to announce that Sir Richard Armstrong will now conduct all performances of Puccini’s Turandot, replacing Aleksandar Markovic.

The Company is grateful to Sir Richard for agreeing to take on these performances at short notice.

Sir Richard Armstrong was Music Director of Scottish Opera from 1993–2005 and Welsh National Opera from 1973–1986. He has conducted regularly at Covent Garden and English National Opera and overseas engagements have taken him to Frankfurt, Geneva, Paris, Munich, Berlin, Amsterdam, Rome, Brussels, Los Angeles, Toronto, Tokyo and Sydney.

He conducts a broad operatic repertoire centred around the works of Verdi, Wagner, Strauss and Janáček. He has conducted regularly at the Edinburgh International Festival (including the highly-acclaimed Ring Cycles in 2003), as well as appearing at the BBC Proms and the Vienna Festival.

After opening at Leeds Town Hall on Friday 28 April, Turandot tours to Nottingham’s Royal Concert Hall, Hull City Hall, Liverpool Philharmonic Hall and Sage Gateshead.

Including music of stunning invention and overwhelming power, the opera contains many memorable arias, from the tender appeal of the slave girl Liù, ‘Signore, ascolta’, to Turandot’s defiant ‘In questa reggia’. It also features one of the most famous arias of all, ‘Nessun dorma’, sung as Calaf anticipates winning the Princess’s hand. Find out more: Turandot in a nutshell.
