With the start of the new school year comes the launch of Opera North Children’s Chorus in Newcastle, giving talented young people in the area the chance to further their musical ambitions with the support, guidance and encouragement of professional singers and performers.

The Opera North Children’s Chorus is open to boys and girls aged 8 to 13, regardless of previous experience or background. The children will meet up once a week at the Theatre Royal to focus on their vocal technique and to work with professional directors and movement specialists to gain new skills in drama and stagecraft. The youngsters will also be invited to perform both locally and nationally alongside the Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North.

Opera North already has strong links with the city regularly touring its mainstage operas to the Theatre Royal and Sage Gateshead. The decision to launch a children’s ensemble there builds on the success enjoyed by the Company’s Children’s Chorus in Leeds which has just celebrated its fifth birthday. During that time, the members have performed in a variety of venues including the Southbank in London. Many of the participants have subsequently joined the Opera North Youth Chorus

Anyone interested in joining the Opera North Children’s Chorus in Newcastle is invited to a free introductory workshop at The CastleGate on Melbourne Street at 5pm on Monday 5 September. Auditions will be held on Monday 19 September at the Theatre Royal, after which successful applicants will be invited to come along to term-time sessions at the theatre between 5pm to 6.30pm every Monday. The group’s first performance is planned for November when they will be joined by the ladies from the Chorus of Opera North to sing a maritime themed repertoire inspired by Britten’s Billy Budd, one of the Company’s Autumn productions.

Membership of the Opera North Children’s Chorus costs £50 per term, with financial assistance available for those who might otherwise be deterred from applying. Anyone wishing to register an interest or find out more should visit Opera North Children's Chorus or contact Opera North Youth Ensemble Manager, Marie Lemaire, on 0113 223 3557.
