Southbank Centre today announce a new festival, Power of Power, programmed around Opera North’s highly-anticipated production of The Ring (at Southbank Centre 28 June - 3 July 2016), which depicts a seductive world of gods, giants, dwarves and heroes caught between love and power.

In a series of talks and performances over four weekends from May to October 2016, Power of Power takes themes from the opera—including Money, Dynasty and Desire—and explores them through a contemporary lens. The festival examines how power is really shifting: who has it? How is it distributed? And where is it heading?

Speakers include Vince Cable, Simon Sebag Montefiore, Svetlana Alexievich, A.L. Kennedy, Philippe Sands, Margo Jefferson, Marina Warner, Paul Mason, Katherine Boo, Sunil Khilnani, Ayesha Hazarika, Maajid Nawaz, Hsiao-Hung Pai and many more.

Alongside the talks and debates is an additional programme of events, a number of them free, including live streaming of all four of Opera North’s sell-out performances in The Ring cycle, in the Clore Ballroom at the Royal Festival Hall.

There will be workshops and events for all ages offering insight into Wagner’s monumental work, where participants can learn to play the anvil in a percussion workshop, join a scratch orchestra for Come and Play! Wagner, or families can visit Opera North’s storytelling tent for Gold, Gods and Giants. The Opera North Children's Chorus will perform a free Myths and Legends concert of works based on Norse legends, and those who want to develop a more detailed understanding of Wagner's monumental work can sign up for a two day insight course, Wagner In Depth.
