Swedish tenor Lars Cleveman will be singing Siegfried in the third opera in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen as Opera North performs the full cycle in six venues across the country.

Lars replaces Daniel Frank, who has withdrawn from the role for personal reasons.

A graduate of Stockholm’s University College of Opera and a highly experienced Wagner singer, Lars Cleveman made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2013 singing Siegfried, having previously performed the role with Stockholm Royal Opera and Opernhaus Zürich. Other Wagnerian appearances include the Götterdämmerung Siegfried with Mark Elder at the Hallé (2009) and Latvian National Opera (2012), Siegmund in Die Walküre at Staatsoper Stuttgart and the title role in Parisfal at the BBC Proms (2013). In 2011, he made his Bayreuth debut singing the title role in Tannhäuser.

In his first appearance for Opera North, Lars Cleveman will be joining a cast of top British and international Wagnerian performers, including Giselle Allen, Mats Almgren, Susan Bickley, Lee Bisset, Michael Druiett, Robert Hayward, Kelly Cae Hogan, Yvonne Howard, Alwyn Mellor, Béla Perencz and Michael Weinius. Many return to Opera North having already impressed audiences in previous instalments of the Ring, including Mati Turi who sings the role of Siegfried in the performances of the Ring’s final instalment, Götterdämmerung.

Conducted by Richard Farnes, in his last appearance as Opera North’s Music Director, and with atmospheric staging and design by Peter Mumford, the first full cycle of the Ring opens at Leeds Town Hall with Das Rheingold on Saturday 23 April. Siegfried is the third opera in Wagner’s Ring, opening in Leeds on Saturday 14 May. After a second cycle in Leeds, Opera North takes the full Ring on tour to Nottingham Royal Concert Hall, The Lowry in Salford, London’s Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre, and Sage Gateshead.
